Good for Omaha
This version had at least one more episode in the earliest part than I remember from my earlier volumes. I gave them away to an Omaha admirer. The covers are more lurid than those of my earlier volumes, and while I like both I kind of miss the drama of the earlier covers. It's good to see Omaha so available, and I look forward to seeing the conclusion of the series. There is education in life to be had from reading Omaha.

But I just don't LIKE this series and I won't be reading any further. I didn't even FINISH this book. The sex was NUCLEAR in hotness, but the storyline made it nasty, dirty, and downright tawdry. I couldn't get into it.

Yes, this is one of the best & brainiest children's/young adult's books out there. The main characters are misfits stranded amongst "normality" in a boarding school... anyone who has been less than incredibly perfect and popular can relate to the heroine. Gardam has created very unusual, intelligent and deep characters... and she writes with compassion and skill. What begins as a story full of painful non-interaction and isolation moves toward riveting romance and self-discovery and bravery, unveiling the plot with an almost gothic mood. Complex, atmospheric, smart and strong; this is for mature young-readers and for adults who remember their own coming-of-age pangs. One of my most memorable surprise discoveries.

I thought Incest was really well written (much like Lolita, where the content is filthy but you can't help but fall in love with the writer for how gifted he is with language), so I checked this one out next. Initially, Philosophy in the Boudoir came off as porn for the thinking man and nothing more - and really, everything has its place - but about halfway into the book there appeared some interesting philosophy that really completes some of what the Marquis got into with Incest. He further develops arguments on morality here, and if you're a Camus fan, a good deal of these arguments are actually pretty compatible with Camus, too. If you can get past (or enjoy?) all the anal sex bits, this is actually some pretty smart philosophy with what appears to be Marquis de Sade's characters debating either side of his own arguments.
